Buying Guide
Windows are extremely important components in a home. Knowing how they are made, from what materials they can be produced, which types of glass can be used, is fundamental in making the right choice for our home and our requirements. The following little guide contains a summary of everything that you need to know in order to make a sound purchase.
PRODUCTION > The manufacturing systems that lead to the creation of windows must carry the ISO 9001:2008 certification. This enables the customer to be confident that all the various phases have been properly carried out to exacting quality control standards.
SUPPORTING STRUCTURE > The supporting structure can be constructed out of solid wood or lamellar wood. The latter provides greater stability of windows over time. During production the product is subjected to a damp-proofing drying process, and it is treated with sun-proof resin that stabilises the level of internal humidity. These days, a traditional wooden structure can also be matched with aluminium. In this way high performance windows are obtained as regards durability and hardwearing resistance against the elements.
METAL COMPONENTS > As regards metal components it is important to check if accessories are produced by specialised or certified companies, as these are fundamental to the long life and functioning of a window.
PAINTS > Paintwork is also a very important stage of the production process as it offers protection to the wooden frame thus providing longer life. The more advanced companies now use ecological products that cause minimum impact on the environment and effectively observe the most stringent legislation on this subject.
GLASS > On today’s market there are various types of glass that can be used for windows, each one with its particular properties that range from energy saving, maintaining the indoor climate of a home, to protection against outside air pollution and the weather. The better the quality of the glass, with double or triple glazing, the better the level of comfort.
TECHNICAL LEGISLATION > Present legislation obliges retailers, at the moment of sale, to issue the product specifications and the EC documentation supplied by the manufacturer. Documents that prove the name and trademark of the manufacturer and the trade category of the product specify the emission of any harmful substances, minimum performance requirements (see table below) and a guide to correct installation with directions on proper use and maintenance. Although there is no specific legal requirement, since 2000 Elle A Elle has carried out constant checks on its products with technical laboratory trials that guarantee consistent quality. The tests carried out are as follows:
| Thermal transmittance by calculation | UNI EN ISO 10077-2 |
| Soundproofing performance | UNI EN ISO 140-3 UNI EN ISO 717-1 |
| Air permeability performance | UNI EN 1026 – UNI EN 12207 |
| Waterproofing performance | UNI EN 1027 – UNI EN 12208 |
| Wind resistance performance | UNI EN 12211 – UNI EN 12210 |
| Safety levels for tilt and turn apertures | UNI EN 948 – UNI EN 14609 |
| Resistance of French windows to soft heavy impact | UNI EN 13049 |
